My Plan
Improve your comfort and energy savings with a customized plan from your co-op experts.

Cover windows with storm windows
- Measure each window for proper storm window fit.
- With outdoor installations, ensure weep holes at the bottom remain clear for drainage.
- Check seals and weatherstripping annually.

Look for rebates on energy efficiency upgrades
- Check co-op website for current rebate programs.
- Review federal tax credits for energy improvements.
- Look for state and local efficiency incentives.

Add a cover box to your attic stairs
- Measure attic opening and components/parts for proper cover size.
- Ensure cover seals tightly against wood framing material.
- Add weatherstripping around edges for a better seal.

Insulate hot water pipes
- Focus on first 3 feet of pipes from the water heater.
- Use pipe sleeves or wrap that matches pipe diameter.
- Secure insulation with tape or zip ties every foot or two.

Lower your water heater’s temperature setpoint
- Set water heater temperature to ~140°F.
- Avoid bacteria: test temperature at the farthest faucet to ensure 120-140°F.
- Adjust seasonally for optimal efficiency.

Install motion sensor lights
- Position sensors to cover busy, high-traffic areas.
- Adjust sensitivity to prevent false triggers from small animals.
- Aim lights downward to maximize efficiency and reduce light pollution.

Plant energy-efficient landscaping
- For summer shade and winter warmth, plant deciduous trees on south and west sides.
- Use evergreens on north side as windbreak.
- Keep plantings away from HVAC unit and power lines.

Use energy-efficient window treatments
- Install treatments close to windows to create an insulating air pocket.
- In summer, lower shades during peak sun hours.
- In winter, close curtains at night to retain heat.

Use a clothesline or drying rack
- Set up in well-ventilated area with good air circulation.
- Monitor indoor humidity levels when drying clothes inside.
- Use during peak daylight hours for fastest drying time.

Upgrade to a high-efficiency water heater
- Compare energy factors (EF) ratings to find most efficient option.
- Consider heat pump models for energy savings and dehumidification.
- Size your unit based on your household's hot water demand at peak.

Install solar panels
- Contact your co-op about available incentives, alternatives and limitations.
- Get bids from a few contractors to compare equipment and pricing.
- Consider the condition of your roof – it’s more expensive to reroof with solar panels.

Seal air leaks in ductwork
- Inspect exposed ducts in attic, basement, and crawlspaces.
- Prevent leaks, smells and pests with mastic sealant or metal-backed tape (not duct tape).
- Consider professional testing to locate hidden leaks.

Install a programmable thermostat
- Set temperatures based on your daily schedule. Adjust when sleeping or away.
- Program different settings for weekdays and weekends.
- Use vacation mode when away for extended periods.

Upgrade to ENERGY STAR® appliances
- Check energy guide labels to compare annual operating costs.
- Look for rebates and incentives before purchasing.
- Choose the right size appliance for your household needs.

Weather-strip your exterior doors
- Choose appropriate weatherstripping type for each door.
- Clean surfaces thoroughly before installation.
- Test door closure to ensure proper operation and seal.

Use smart power strips and wall outlets
- Use to prevent devices from drawing energy when not in use.
- For maximum savings, place where electronics cluster together.
- Use a wi-fi enabled strip or outlet to customize and control.

Install ceiling fans
- Position blades 8-9 feet from floor for optimal airflow.
- In summer, run counterclockwise at higher speeds for a cooling effect.
- In winter, switch to clockwise at low speed to circulate warm air.

Add attic insulation
- Check current insulation depth before starting any work.
- Follow recommended R-values: R-30 to R-49 for most attics.
- Ensure insulation is even and covers all spaces without gaps.

Seal air leaks around your home
- Check for gaps around pipes, wires, vents, and electrical parts.
- Apply caulk or foam sealant to prevent drafts, smells and to keep pests out.
- Focus on damp areas to reduce moisture buildup and mold growth.

Clean or replace HVAC filters
- Check filter monthly during peak heating and cooling seasons.
- Replace when filter appears dirty or every 60-90 days.
- Match your filter to the MERV rating for your HVAC system.

Install low-flow showerheads
- Choose WaterSense-labeled models for best comfort and performance.
- Remove old shower head, clean pipe threads and add thread seal tape.
- Hand-tighten the new showerhead, then test for leaks.

Insulate your water heater
- Purchase a water heater blanket that fits your unit (don’t forget the top!).
- For gas units, leave space around controls and intake/venting.
- Secure blanket following manufacturer instructions.

Upgrade to LED lighting
- Replace most frequently used bulbs first.
- Select from warm to cool light colors to match your space.
- Choose long-lasting LEDs to reduce ladder climbs and replacements.

Seal window drafts
- Apply weatherstripping or caulk around window frames.
- Use clear caulk to seal visible gaps and cracks around glass.
- Install storm windows for extra protection in winter.

Switch thermostat fan to “auto” mode
- Switch fan setting from "on" to "auto."
- Let your system manage air circulation automatically.
- Reduce unnecessary fan runtime, energy use and sound.

Adjust thermostat setting when asleep or away
- Change your setpoint by 7-10 degrees while sleeping (down in winter, up in summer).
- Program different schedules for weekdays and weekends.
- Use smart features to avoid using expensive AUX heat when not needed.

Use cold water for laundry
- Select the cold water setting for regular loads.
- Use cold-water specific detergents for best results.
- Reserve hot water for heavily soiled items or sanitizing needs.

Install a smart thermostat
- Schedule temperature changes to align with your routine.
- Use the app to adjust settings remotely when plans change.
- Enable geofencing to automatically adjust the temperature based on your location.
